This event happened on a Saturday, last March. It happened when the lockdown was looming and people were rushing out to get supplies. I decided to go to Walmart. I was suddenly desperate to get a fish. I bought my supplies there, but not the fish. After Walmart and before going to PetSmart, I ran into Market Basket to grab a few necessities. When I opened my trunk, to put them in...my giant fish bowl rolled out, and smashed on the ground. Glass was everywhere! “Would you like some help?” He offered. A child was offering to help pick up glass in a parking lot. I said, “no, I am all set.” Then he asked. “How are you going to clean this up?” We both just stood and stared at the ground for a minute. He said, “why don’t you take some of your groceries out of the bags? You can layer the bags to protect your hands. I will hold a bag while you drop the glass pieces in. That is exactly what we did. In any other time, this act of kindness would have been appreciated. However, during these days of Covid, especially the early days, doing something for someone else seems more than kind. It is honorable. J.J. Rybak of Tiverton is an honorable young man.
